The Architectural Idea of the Goetheanum

Der Baugedanke des Goetheanum

Ten lectures given at various places between 2 October 1920 and 30 December 1921. 106 illustrations.

Contents

Rudolf Steiner gave numerous lectures on the project of building the Goetheanum, and this for several reasons: as a reaction to misunderstandings and hostility from outside, as in-depth explanations for the staff and in preparation for the opening. These have already appeared under the titles " Ways to a New Architectural Style" (GA 286), "The Dornach Building as a Landmark of Historical Development and Artistic Impulses for Transformation" (GA 287) and "Architecture, Sculpture and Painting of the First Goetheanum" (GA 288). While the latter volume includes Steiner's lectures up to the opening of the Goetheanum building in the autumn of 1920, the present volume contains lectures and tours of the building from the autumn of 1920 up to the last documented lecture of this kind in December 1921, one year before the Goetheanum burnt down on New Year's Eve 1922/23. The title goes back to a book first published by Marie Steiner in 1932, "Der Baugedanke des Goetheanum" (The Architecturalg Idea of the Goetheanum), which, apart from the pictorial material, included only one lecture. In this respect it can be regarded as a fundamentally expanded new edition and continuation. Since this edition is a compilation of individual lectures, lecture passages and only a few related lectures, the reflections stand on their own and can be studied individually.

The volume contains numerous historical images in an extensive illustration section.
