On the mountain
According to Rudolf Steiner, the expression on the mountain is an occult reference to the spiritual level of inspiration. In fact, inspiration is more easily heard in the high air of the mountains than elsewhere.
„On the mountain, in the rarefied air, in the different ratio of the distribution of oxygen and nitrogen, the clairvoyant consciousness is more attuned to undergo inspirations, to let new clairvoyant powers arise. Therefore the expression 'climbing the mountain' is not meant merely symbolically, but the mountain conditions favour the possibility of forming new occult powers within oneself.“ (Lit.:GA 139, p. 151)
The voice of inspiration can only be heard far from the outer world in the intimate interior of one's own soul. This is best done on the mountain.
„In the New Testament the expression "on the mountain" is used several times. "On the mountain" means: in the mystery, in the interior, in the intimate. - The Sermon on the Mount is also not to be understood as a sermon to the people, but as an instruction of the disciples in the intimate. The transfiguration on the mountain is also to be understood in this sense.“ (Lit.:GA 93a, p. 63)
