Adversaries are spiritual beings who originally came from the regular hierarchies, but who have partly lagged behind in their own development, but have also partly hurried ahead and now oppose the regular creative growing of the world in an inhibiting way and are therefore rightly called evil - but they are not evil in the absolute sense. They have not risen up against God of their own free will, but have, as it were, been "commanded" to their special task, as Rudolf Steiner often expresses it.
