Joseph Heinrich Beuys (pronunciation: bɔɪs; * May 12, 1921 in Krefeld; † January 23, 1986 in Düsseldorf) was a German sculptor, performance artist, draftsman, art theorist, and anthroposophist.

In his pictorial and sculptural work he dealt intensively with questions of humanism, sociology, and in particular with Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy. This ultimately led to his own definition of an expanded definition of art and to the concept of "social sculpture" as a total work of art in which, at the end of the 1970s, he called for creative participation in society and politics with the words "Every human being is an artist". Internationally, Joseph Beuys is one of the best-known artists of modernism and is considered a pioneer of Fluxus in Germany.
