Shut, the shadow of man, was according to the conception of the ancient Egyptians the equivalent of his soul and thus a part of his being. After death, it could temporarily detach itself from the body and wander freely. In the tombs of the New Kingdom of Egypt, the shadow can be seen leaving the tomb, accompanied by the soul bird Ba.
In the Egyptian Book of the Dead it says: "You demons who imprison Osiris in the dungeon, may you plunge annihilated into darkness! My shadow shall not be given to you! My soul be not given to you in captivity! A way be opened for my shadow, for my soul, that on the day of judgement in the hereafter it may behold the gods, the great ones, in its shrine."
