The Latinised name Johannes (Greek: Ἰωάννης Iōannēs), which in English usually appears as John, is derived from the Hebrew name Yohanan (Hebrew: יוחנן) meaning "the LORD (YHWH) is gracious", which in Judaism is seen as expressing a "birth given as a divine gift".
