Egyptian mysteries
The Egyptian mysteries were instituted by Thoth-Hermes (Trismegistus), the legendary inaugurator and teacher of Egyptian culture. The ancient sacred wisdom he brought to the Egyptians is said to go back to that time, the three Sothic cycles of 1460 Julian years each, before the year 1322 B.C., which marks the Exodus of Israel from Egypt, i.e. to the 6th millennium B.C. (Lit.:GA 60, p. 369f).
Thoth Hermes
Hermes Trismegistus (Greek: Ἑρμῆς Τρισμέγιστος for "thrice-greatest Hermes"), the thrice-great Thoth, was, according to Rudolf Steiner, the inaugurator and teacher of Egyptian culture. The light to which Hermes pointed the way, the essential spiritual sun that was once to transform the earth, is the Christ himself. Hermes pointed to him when he gave his wisdom teachings, which are recorded in the Tabula Smaragdina.
„But he in whom the Egyptians saw, as it were, all the original greatness of that ancient clairvoyant wisdom, they called their great sage, the ancient Hermes. When, in a later time, a renewer of the ancient Egyptian wisdom came again, he called himself Hermes again - as, in fact, so many did according to an old custom of the Egyptian sages. And his confessors, because they said that the wisdom of Hermes, who had lived in the distant past, had been revived, now called this first Hermes the Thrice Great: Hermes Trismegistus. But basically only the Greek called him Hermes; among the Egyptians he had the name Thoth.“ (Lit.:GA 60, p. 351)
