Apostles (Greekαπόστολος apóstolos; Hebrewשליח sheliach "messenger") are in the broadest sense the disciples of Jesus Christ who were directly commissioned by him as "messengers". For example, in the Gospel of Luke - and only there - seventy-two disciples are mentioned (Luke 10:1–24). The Latin Church usually calls them "disciples", while the Orthodox Church calls them "apostles". The inner circle of Christ's disciples were the Twelve Apostles, in short the Twelve (cf. Mark 6:7–13).
