The legend is a type of folklore text or literary genre related to the fairy tale and the saga. The term is derived from the medieval Latin expression legenda, which means "that which is to be read", "that which is to be read aloud" or "the pieces to be read". The origin of the term thus indicates - in contrast to the saga - a close relationship to literary tradition. As early as antiquity, literary narratives were written about persons who were perceived as outstanding religious-moral personalities and "saints".
