Wolfgang Schad (* 27 July 1935 in Biberach an der Riss) is a German evolutionary biologist, goetheanist and anthroposophist. In the field of natural sciences he is considered one of the most important goetheanists of the 20th century.
Life
After working for many years as a Waldorf teacher at the Goethe School in Pforzheim, Schad became a lecturer at the Seminar for Waldorf Education in Stuttgart in 1975. He also worked at the Educational Research Centre of the Federation of Waldorf Schools in Stuttgart, which he headed for a time.
In 1992, although he had not yet obtained his doctorate, he took over the specially founded chair of evolutionary biology and morphology at the Witten/Herdecke University. He submitted his dissertation later. This was made possible by the patron Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth, after whom the institute was named.
His son Albrecht Schad also became a Waldorf teacher and, after his father's departure, also a lecturer at the Freie Hochschule Stuttgart in the training for upper school teachers at Waldorf schools.[1]
In the meantime Wolfgang Schad has become emeritus and Bernd Rosslenbroich has taken over the management of the institute.[2][3]
Scientific work
In his major work, Man and mammals: Toward a biology of form (1971), Schad transferred Rudolf Steiner's idea of the threefold structure of the human organism to mammals in the sense of a comparative morphology. This was groundbreaking within Goethean biology.
From 1982 to 1985 Schad published four anthologies with works by various authors under the title "Goetheanist Natural Science". Many of Schad's works appeared in anthroposophical journals, and he only occasionally wrote for others. As head of the Institute for Evolutionary Biology he became editor of the Scientific Series of the Institute for Evolutionary Biology and Morphology University of Witten/Herdecke.[4][5]
In his research, Schad came to the conclusion that evolutionary developments did not take place by chance alone, but also not by teleology, but that in many living beings there lived a piece of inner autonomy which could lead them to new forms of development as a result of epigenetic changes, provided these were inherited.
„The element of chance frees the course of evolution from the teleological determinism of any plan. Meanwhile, quantum and chaos theory have also freed it from causal determinism in its claim to absoluteness.“
His central themes include the temporal shape in the development of animals and humans and heterochrony.[7][8][9] In retirement, he still wrote several books, which were published by Urachhausverlag.[10]
