It is of central spiritual and religious importance for the monotheistic [[w:Abrahamic religions|Abrahamic religions]]. Jerusalem is first mentioned in the [[w:Old Testament|Old Testament]]. However, the oldest traces of human settlement date back to around 5000 BC.
