Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (* 12 August 1831 in Yekaterinoslav, Russia, now Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine; † 8 May 1891 in London), called Madame Blavatsky or occasionally HPB for short, was a German-Russian (later with American citizenship) writer and co-founder of modern Theosophy as well as the Theosophical Society.
She was born Helena von Hahn. After her marriage, her name was actually Yelena Petrovna Blavatskaya (Елена Петровна Блавацкая, in English transliteration: Yelena Petrovna Blavatskaya).
